Be part of our team and join Baraka for this volunteer trip to Zambia. Our first three days are spent at Baraka-supported schools in an impoverished rural area north of Kabwe. From Kabwe we travel to Lusaka, where we will visit another Baraka supported school before setting off for our next adventure; a canoe safari on the Lower Zambezi.
Day 1 (Sun 15th September 2019): Arrive in Lusaka
Meet at Lusaka airport and transfer to Eureka Lodge for a relaxing afternoon and overnight stay. Eureka Lodge is a nice base with thatched chalets and tame wildlife roaming around. It is not unusual to walk around the grounds and come face to face with a giraffe or zebra! Meals: None.
Day 2 (Monday 16th September 2019): Lusaka - Kato - Kabwe
Transfer together to Kato School (or Shambanse) and spend the day at the project before continuing to Kabwe and our lodge for the next four nights. Meals: None.
Days 3-5 (Tuesday 17th - Thursday 19th September 2019): Project work Kabwe
Spend three days assisting at Baraka projects in the area. The first two days will be spent helping at the new Baraka Learning Centre, and the third day you will visit one of the Baraka-supported schools in the area. Meals: Breakfast.
Day 6 (Friday 20th September 2019): Kabwe to Lusaka
Today we leave Kabwe and travel back to Lusaka, stopping to visit Upeme School en route. Upon arrival in Lusaka we will check into Eureka Lodge for the next two nights. Meals: Breakfast.
Day 7 (Saturday 21st September 2019): Project work
Today is the annual sponsored kids' day. This is an educational but fun day for all the kids and you will be asked to help out with games and lessons. For the children the day will be one of the highlights of their year and is a great opportunity for you to interact with them. Meals: None.
Day 8 (Sunday 22nd September 2019): Lusaka to Lower Zambezi
This morning we visit Jewel School before travelling this afternoon to the Zambezi, where we spend the night camping at Breezers campsite which is located on the banks of the Lower Zambezi river, and where hippos and other wildlife can often be seen. Meals: Dinner.
Day 9 (Monday 23rd September 2019): Lower Zambezi
This morning we set off overland to Chiawa where we commence our downstream canoe safari. The next two days are spent on the river enjoying the delights of this spectacular natural landscape. We will canoe downstream to our camp which will be set up close to the river bank, or on islands in the river. Along the way we will take advantage of the opportunities to spot wild animals; elephants and hippos are plentiful. It is also possible to spot impala, kudu, waterbuck, warthog, crocodile and buffalo. The canoeing does not require any specific experience, just a good overall level of fitness and a willingness to give it a go. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 10 (Tuesday 24th September 2019): Lower Zambezi
Today we continue our canoeing safari, reaching the fly camp in time for lunch. We enjoy a free afternoon here and sleep here tonight. Fly camp is equipped with showers, permanent tents and basic toilet facilities. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 11 (Wednesday 25th September 2019): Lower Zambezi - Lusaka
This morning we return to Breezers campsite for lunch, travelling either by boat or overland. This afternoon we drive back to Lusaka (approx. 3 hours) in time for our evening flights home. Meals: Breakfast and lunch.
