Grand Canyon

The Challenge

The Grand Canyon is an enormous gorge a mile deep, up to 18 miles wide and 277 miles long, carved out by the Colorado River. The distances are deceptive and the scale unimaginable. On this challenge in the state of Arizona, we descend into one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, the heart of the Grand Canyon at Havasu Canyon where we will trek and explore this incredible landscape, discovering turquoise pools and sleeping under the stars camping. This exciting challenge takes you into one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders and ends with a day in Las Vegas to celebrate your achievements.

Itinerary

Day 1 (Wed 20th September): London - Phoenix
Fly London to Phoenix. On arrival, transfer to a hotel for an overnight stay. (Meals included: None)

Day 2 (Thu 21st September): Phoenix Route 66
After an early breakfast we set off through the Sonoran Desert to Sedona, Arizona. From here we'll enjoy an introductory trek (approx. 5-10km) in Red Rock State Park where you'll see the beautiful red sandstone cliffs for which Sedona is renowned worldwide. We stop for a picnic lunch before continuing our journey to our hotel along the famous Route 66. (Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 3 (Fri 22nd September): Grand Canyon
We start early with a transfer to Hualapai Hilltop from where we commence our trek. We join the trail at 1,650m elevation following it until we reach a dry streambed and the trail begins to level out. After a trailside lunch, we descend deeper in the labyrinth of red sandstone. We continue on the cottonwood-lined paths through an Indian village into the canyon's back-country. A further 3km trek brings us past Havasu Falls and into camp home for the next three nights. 16km trekking. (Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 4(Sat 23rd September): Grand Canyon - Mooney Falls and Beaver Falls
Today we are confronted with our first major challenge, Mooney Falls, a steep trail with tunnels and ladders built into the brittle stone adjacent to the waterfall which we use to descend further down the canyon. After a successful descent of Mooney Falls we will continue our brisk pace downstream along a more primitive trail than we have seen yet, climbing up and down over rock outcroppings, wading through the creek and ducking under overhead branches. Those brave enough can jump into a deep pool above Beaver Falls and explore underwater grottos. The next thrill is a downward climb along a series of limestone ledges to a giant, beautiful pool at the base of the main cascade of Beaver Falls. From here we return to camp, with our guides taking us off the beaten track to explore. 12-14km trekking. (Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 5 (Sun 24th September): Grand Canyon - Carbonate Canyon, Rock and New Navajo Falls
We leave camp after breakfast and trek up the canyon to a hidden cleft in the cliff wall, where we will be guided into the narrow Carbonate Canyon. After searching for ancient fossils in the dry creek bed we will enter a cavern in the cliff side, exploring as deep as you dare! After washing off the dust with a swim in the pool below Havasu Falls, we head back to camp for lunch. This afternoon we will continue trekking to Rock Falls, where we traverse a narrow ledge behind the roaring spray. Upon reaching New Navajo Falls there is time to swim, jump and explore this incredible multi-faceted cascade and pools. 8-10km trekking with challenging water crossings. (Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 6 (Mon 25th September): Grand Canyon Las Vegas
We start very early this morning, leaving camp at 5am. We trek back along the same path that brought us to the canyon floor. The trek to the rim is difficult, but reaching it brings us to the end of our challenge and the thrill of conquering one of the most remote areas of the Grand Canyon. We then transfer to Las Vegas for a chance to celebrate our achievements! 16km trekking. (Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Day 7 (Tues 26th September): Las Vegas
A free day in Las Vegas! Enjoy this amazing city at your leisure before gathering for a farewell dinner this evening. (Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 8-9 (Wed 27th - Thu 28th September): Las Vegas - London
Free time until the transfer to the airport for the return flight to London. Depending on flight schedules you will arrive the next morning. (Meals included: Breakfast)
