Take on the inhospitable environment of the beautiful Sahara Desert on this charity challenge. You will experience the hustle and bustle of Marrakech and learn about the day-to-day life of the nomadic Berber people as you trek for two full days and two half days through the desert. Each night you will have the chance to sleep under the stars, eat incredible food cooked in the traditional Berber way and fall asleep to the sound of the crackling campfire and the gentle snores of the camels.
Day 1 (Thursday 15 March): London to Marrakech Fly from London to Marrakech where you will be met by your guide and commence the drive halfway to the desert crossing the stunning high Atlas mountains. We stop overnight at a hotel in the village of Ouarzazate (approx. 6hrs drive).
Day 2 (Friday 16 March): Ouarzazate to Sahara After an early start we drive further south, crossing the Low Atlas Mountains before following ancient caravan routes into the arid Sahara desert (journey time approx. 3 hours from Ouarzazate). Here we will be welcomed by the rest of the trek staff (and the camels) and briefed about some of the local traditions before commencing our trek into the vast and arid Sahara desert, stopping overnight to camp under the stars of the Sahara. Approx. trek distance: 5km.
Days 3 - 5 (Saturday 17 - Sunday 19 March): Sahara Desert Our trek continues through the desert as we traverse sand dunes and rocky, lunar landscapes for the next 3 days. We are aided by our local Berber team comprising of the guides, cook and camel owners (the camels are our porters, carrying our luggage and equipment). Each day you can enjoy the varied Saharan landscape and learn about how important it is to respect and comply with the forces of nature in the desert. On average we will cover 15-20km per day but this will vary. As the trek progresses we learn how the nomadic people of the Sahara live: from cooking to sleeping out under the stars and reading the magnificent Saharan night sky.
Day 6 (Tuesday 20 March): Sahara to Oulad Driss to Marrakech This morning it's the final leg of the trek back to the village where we bid farewell to the trekking team and head back to Marrakech (approx. 9 hours drive). Enjoy a farewell dinner tonight and overnight stay at a central hotel. Approx. trek distance: 5km.
Day 7 (Wednesday 21 March): Marrakech to London Some free time this morning to explore the exotic city of Marrakech before flying back to London (subject to flight times).
