This 5-day trek in Romania is a great opportunity to experience the country's rugged and beautiful mountain landscapes, uncover the legend of Dracula and get a unique insight into the local culture. Trekking through the Southern Carpathians, also known as the Transylvanian Alps, you will enjoy some of the most spectacular views in Romania with glacial lakes, alpine grasslands and ancient woodlands. By carrying your own kit each day you can get away from the beaten track and enjoy remote and uncrowded wildnerness with your expert trekking guides.
Day 1 (Saturday 4th May 2019): London - Bucharest - Sinaia
Depart London for the flight to Bucharest. Depending on flight times we will depart from Bucharest airport to Sinaia, a small town in the mountains, for an overnight stay in a local guesthouse (approx. 2.5 hours' drive). If the flight schedules mean a late arrival we will stay at a guesthouse in Bucharest and will transfer the following morning.
Day 2 (Sunday 5th May 2019): Sinaia - Padina Hut
We set off after breakfast for our first day of trekking in the Bucegi Mountains. You will be responsible for carrying your own kit for the next three days so it is vital that you pack lightly with only the absolute essentials. We trek across the Bucegi Plateau today, passing the Romanian Sphinx (2216m), a rock formation that looks like the profile of a human face. From here we descend towards our mountain hut in the heart of the massif, Padina Hut. Trekking time: approx. 7-8 hours. Distance: approx. 19.5km.
Day 3 (Monday 6th May 2019): Padina Hut - Omu Hut
Today we explore the quieter side of the mountains with amazing views over the whole Bran-Rucar region and all the way across to the Piatra Craiului National Park (conditions permitting). We will trek along an old military border between Transylvania and Walachia, where we will admire the views of steep and rugged cliffs along the way. Today is challenging with a steep uphill ascent but the reward is spending the night in the country's highest mountain hut, Omu Hut, at 2507m. The hut is basic but the panoramic views make it worth the visit. Trekking time: approx. 5-6 hours. Distance: approx. 13km.
Day 4 (Tuesday 7th May 2019): Omu Hut - Bran
Today we have a long descent to Bran (approximately 5-6 hours downhill) with views of Piatra Craiului most of the way. The natural landscape is beautiful and you should keep your eye out for some of the wildlife in the area including chamois, red deer, wild boar, squirrels and more. Brown bears and wolves also inhabit this area although it is incredibly rare to spot them. We will arrive at Bran Castle, one of the incredible buildings associated with the legend of Dracula, before continuing to our guesthouse for a home cooked meal, hot shower and access to your spare baggage. You may wish to take this opportunity to swap dirty laundry for clean items, replenish your energy snacks and so on. You will carry your kit again for the following two days. Trekking time: approx. 7 hours. Distance: approx. 14km.
Day 5 (Wednesday 8th May 2019): Bran - Curmatura Hut
A short transfer this morning brings us to the spectacular Piatra Craiului National Park we have been admiring from afar the past two days. Carrying our kit again for today and tomorrow, we trek up a steep trail to the top of the mountain ridge and will traverse along its jagged spine where some areas have vertical drops on both sides. The views from the ridge are astounding. We descend into the valley to Curmatura Hut where we will have dinner and our final night in the mountains. Trekking time: approx. 7-8 hours. Distance: approx. 16.5km.
Day 6 (Thursday 9th May 2019): Curmatura Hut - Brasov
Our final day of trekking brings us down to Zarnesti, walking through a beautiful forest and a deep Gorge. As we approach the town we will see how the people live in the rural mountain areas. Late this afternoon we arrive in Zarnesti where our trek ends. We transfer to Brasov (approx. 1 hour) which is a beautifully preserved Baroque town and check in at your guesthouse where you will stay for the next two nights. Trekking time: approx. 7-8 hours. Distance: approx. 10km.
Day 7 (Friday 10th May 2019): Brasov
Today we visit Casa Sperantei, Hospice of Hope, which is a non-governmental hospice care organisation established in 1992. It specialises in care for terminally ill patients and you'll have a chance to see how it has grown and flourished over recent years.
Day 8 (Saturday 11th May 2019): Brasov - Bucharest - London
If flight times permit, you can enjoy some free time to explore Brasov before we transfer to Bucharest Airport for the return flight to London.
