This stunning 4-day trek along the vibrant Costa Brava and the rugged Pyrenees transports you back into history as we retrace the footsteps of WW2 escapees who fled Nazi-occupied France to Barcelona and beyond. This is a truly inspirational trek offering an insight into the hardships endured and bravery of all those who escaped, those who helped and those who sadly did not make it to safety.
Day 1: London to Perpignan to Argeles sur la Mer
Depart London for Perpignan. On arrival meet the local team and transfer to Argeles sur la Mer via the Camp de Rivesaltes and Canet Plage. We enjoy a welcome dinner and trek briefing this evening. Accommodation: Guesthouse. Meals: Dinner.
Day 2: Argeles sur la Mer to Banyuls sur la Mer
We depart this morning on foot, following the route which hundreds of refugees took across the Pyrennes into Spain. We transfer to Collioure and start our trek via Cap de Bear and Port Vendres. Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin, who famously used this trail, stayed for a few days in Port Vendres during his escape. Today you will see a number of military bunkers along the way. Trekking: approx. 6 hours / 17 km / 730m ascent. Accommodation: Camping. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 3: Banyuls sur la Mer to Portbou
Today we ascend through vineyards via the Walter Benjamin escape route crossing the Col de Rumplissa (583m), where a memorial marks the escape route which hundreds of refugees took into Spain. Lisa and Hans Fittko helped hundreds of refugees over the Pyrenees to Spain and onto Barcelona, Madrid, Badajoz and Lisbon. From the col we descend, at times steeply, to the quaint seaside resort of Portbou for the night. Trekking: approx. 6 hours / 13 km / 700m ascent. Accommodation: Hostel. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 4: Portbou to Port de la Selva
After a visit to the Walter Benjamin memorial we depart Portbou and head along the ridge where stunning views surround us. We continue along a coastal path to Cap de Ras, where we will find remote beaches and have the opportunity to swim this afternoon. If time permits, the team may request to visit the St Pere de Rodes monastery (entrance fee payable locally, approx. €7) before continuing onto the campsite at Port de Selva. Trekking: approx. 7 hours / 19 km / 380m ascent. Accommodation: Camping. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 5: Port de la Selva to Port Lligat to Barcelona
Our final day of trekking begins with an early breakfast and takes us to the Cap de Creus National Park, and the lighthouse, where you will have some time to explore this area which is renowned for its natural beauty and wildlife. Further along the coast you will find Casa Museu Salvador Dali. Dali sought exile in the United States during WW2 and only returned to his home in 1948. If you wish to visit the museum, pre-booking is required and an entrance fee (approx. €12) is payable. At the end of your trek you will transfer to Barcelona where you will stay for one night and enjoy a celebratory farewell dinner this evening. Trekking: approx. 4 hours / 16 km / 440m ascent.
